As part of International Women’s week, we interviewed Maria to get to know her a little better and what attracted her into the industry

What is your role within the company?

I am the Company Secretary. I do all the invoicing and general paperwork. I am also the main contact for most clients and liaise with them and their design teams throughout all projects

What attracted you to the industry?

I was only 17 when I got my first role within the construction industry, so I kind of fell into the industry and I haven’t left since. I started my career working reception at a civil engineering company. This was a great insight into the industry and went to work in the Luxury Property sector, architectures and then Shopfitting

Your favourite project you have worked on?

Due to the nature of the works I’ve done, it’s difficult to pick my favourite but one of the most memorable was a project we completed for Oliver Bonas in York.

The site was in a grade II listed building and one of the most haunted spots in York, before Oliver Bonas took over the store it was used for a Ghost Tour. The first time we visited the store you would hear noises in rooms no one was in and doors would slam without a gust of wind.

You can read about all the ghosts that are suspected to take residents here http://www.ghost-story.co.uk/index.php/haunted-buildings/333-number-35-stonegate-york-england

What are the biggest changes you have noticed in the industry?

One of the biggest changes I have noticed is the progression of women into top positions. When I started in the industry it was very male dominant, but now I am starting to deal with more women.

If you could go anywhere, where would it be?

I’ve been lucky and have travelled a fair amount but I’m still to do a safari so that’s top of my list.

What’s your favourite quote?

My favourite quote is from AA Milne “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”. I have a plaque on the wall.

What advice would you give someone who wants to get into the industry?

The best advice I could give someone who is looking to start their careers is, don’t be put off trying any profession because of an outdated reputation, if you don’t like it you can move on until you find what makes you happy.
